Health Minister: Tuberculosis Medicine Available, Case Numbers within Normal Ratio.

DAMASCUS, (SANA) Health Minister Dr.

Sd al-Nayef affirmed that medicine for tuberculosis patients is available, with the Ministry continuing to providing tuberculosis treatment for free in its centers for all patients.

In a statement during his tour of the Tuberculosis Treatment Center in Damascus on Monday, al-Nayef said that there's an increase in tuberculosis cases this year compared to previous years due to current events, but the case numbers are within the normal ratio for such circumstances.

He said that the success rate of treating tuberculosis reached 83% in 2012, noting that Syria as among the top countries in the region in the successful treatment of tuberculosis and preventing its spread.

Al-Nayef said that the Ministry's goal is to cut tuberculosis case numbers to half by 2015.

In turn, Director of Contagious and Terminal Diseases Department at the Ministry, Dr.

Kinaz Sheikh, said that the number of tuberculosis patients in 2012 was 2975, in addition to seven cases that didn't respond to treatment, adding that mortality among tuberculosis patients in Syria doesn't exceed 4%.

She pointed out that the treatment program for severe cases of tuberculosis requires two years, six of them spent in a hospital followed by a year and a half of daily checkups at the Center, costing approximately SYP 300,000 for a full treatment, adding that ordinary tuberculosis cases require only SYP 3,000 to 5,000 and takes six months.

Sheikh said that the tuberculosis treatment program covers all areas in Syria through 14 specialized centers and 104 other centers.

For his part, Director of the Tuberculosis Treatment Center, Dr.

Amer Zahreddin, said that the Center received 845 patients in 2012 and already received 160 in 2013, with the Center working under considerable strain as it receives patients from other provinces.
