Health Minister, UNDP Resident Coordinator Discuss Boosting Cooperation.
Wael al-Halqi discussed on Monday with United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Resident Coordinator Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed the cooperation programs between the Ministry and UN organizations operating in Syria and means for boosting cooperation in the field of health to improve health services.
Al-Halqi reviewed his Ministry's efforts to improve the health sector on the national level and meet the health demands of Syrians by providing them with quality services, particularly in the areas that need them the most.
The Minister said that field trips to a number of governorates will be conducted along that will include representatives of international organizations concerned with health issues in Syria, and that the trips will start in Daraa governorate which currently contains 9 general hospitals, 102 health centers, 1 general clinic and 5 private hospitals.
Al-Halqi noted that the Ministry is working to restructure the health sector and develop the skills of its workers in order to better serve all social groups in all areas and governorates.
He also affirmed his Ministry's interest in cooperating with international health organization and benefiting from the technical supports and the expertise they provide, expressing interest in developing human resources and e-governance.
For his part, Ould Cheikh Ahmed voiced the UNDP's readiness to support the Ministry's efforts, noting that the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria provided a USD 3.4 million grant for Syria recently which will be employed in relevant existing projects to help improve health services and establishments in Syria.
Also on Monday, Minister al-Halqi attended a meeting of the joint committee between the Minister of Health and the Syrian Physicians Guild which focused on means for the Guild to participate in administrative, technical and financial capacities in managing small and medium health establishments.
The committee also discussed the Ministry's pricing for medical examinations and a number of administrative issues relevant to health and medicine.
During the meeting, al-Halqi said that improving cooperation between the Ministry and the Guild will reflect positively on health, medical services and doctors' scientific and professional levels.
For his part, head of the Physicians Guild Dr.
Abdelkader Hasan said that the Guild will work to boost cooperation with the general sector, particularly regarding medical facilities in remote areas, through encouraging volunteer work.
