Health IT terms defined.

The National Alliance for Health Information Technology (Alliance) has added March 24 to April 9, 2008, as a second public comment period on completed work towards defining five health IT terms. The terms are: electronic medical record (EMR), electronic health record (EHR), personal health record (PHR), health information exchange (HIE) and regional health information organization (RHIO). Feedback received by the project's Record Work Group and Network Work Group during the two previous public forums and the first public comment period has already been incorporated. Revisions based on feedback included the HIE definition as the process of electronic health information exchange rather than the governing function or entity. "We as an industry need to quickly reach clarity and certainty about these terms, so we can move forward with the important business of improving healthcare through health IT," says Alliance VP and chief marketing officer Jane Horowitz. Horowitz explained that this comment period is to seek names and associated definitions for a sixth term to describe the entity that governs HIE beyond a specific regionally-based community. The Alliance is working on the project with BearingPoint Inc., a management and technology consultancy. Remarks may be submitted at www.definitions.nahit.org.
