Heading off to...Oxford.

WHERE IS IT? The city of dreaming spires, and alma mater of 47 Nobel Laureates, it's marking links with Tolkien as Peter Jackson's first part of The Hobbit hits cinemas. Next month also sees the 200th as nniversary of the first publication of Jane Austin's Pride and Prejudice.

VISIT Wander round and marvel at the city's ancient colleges, with their honey-coloured stone. Tolkien and his friend CS Lewis - author of The Chronicles of Narnia - were both professors at Pembroke College and Magdalen College respectively. Jane Austen was tutored in Oxford by the widow of a former Principal of Brasenose College, and her father and brother became Fellows of St John's College. Take a tour highlighting the city's other literary links, such as Lewis Carroll, or the Bodleian Library.
