Head race is just oar-some; IN BRIEF.

ONE of the North's most prestigious river races saw 268 boats and around 1,500 competititors take to the Tyne.

The Reece Group-sponsored Rutherford Head of the River Boat Race started at Scotswood, Newcastle, and attracted a record number of competitors from across the country.

The challenging 5,000m course from Scotswood to Newburn included narrow bends, a congested course and tidal conditions.

Simon Dobson, chairman of race organisers Tyne Rowing Club, said: "We showcased a huge array of rowing talent from across the country at the weekend and it was fantastic we have attracted more entries than ever this year."
