GEORGE Best's guilt over what he had done to his son and wife drove him back to booze after he had been off it for a year, Angie Best has revealed.
The former model, 69, who was married to the Manchester United and Northern Ireland legend for eight years, said he started to remember what he had done to people once he stopped drinking.
And the guilt he felt was why he went back to alcohol after having a liver transplant in 2002.
The Belfast-born soccer star died due to transplant related infections in 2005 aged 59.
Speaking on the Hot Mess Mums podcast, the ex-Playboy bunny, who was wed to George from 1978 to 1986, said she has no anger towards him.

She added: "I think it was the hardest thing for George too when he got his new liver and he had been so good for a year and his brain started to come alive again and get clear.
"And he started to remember the things that he had done to so many people, especially his newborn baby and his wife.
"That guilt that came back was not dealt with and I think that is what made him go back on to the booze."
She said she tried to save George but had to choose between looking after him and son Calum, now 40.
Angie, who is in a relationship with former ice hockey player Mark Miller, added: "George was a wonderful man, I absolutely adored him.
"That's why he got away with so much s**t because I forgave him all the time.
"I never have any anger - the only anger I have is that he shouldn't be dead."
She still wears her ex-husband's watch every day.
Angie also believes George was mentally unwell.
She revealed: "I thought he just needed someone to love him and to cook him dinner and to make a house for him and to take care of him.
"When I look back on it now, in hindsight, I think he was depressed.
"I didn't know what depression was then."
