HbbTV Association to Merge with California-based Smart TV Alliance.
1 September 2016 - California-based application developers The Smart TV Alliance will merge its activities into Switzerland-based broadband delivery organisation HbbTV Association, extending the scope of the HbbTV Specification to address Over-The-Top Services, the organisation said.
When combined, the two organisations say they will streamline standards for OTT innovation so consumers can enjoy ever more interactive experiences on their connected TV devices.
Founders LG Electronics, TP Vision, Toshiba and Panasonic established the Smart TV Alliance in 2012 to create attractive, platform-independent services for Smart TV applications.
Smart TV Alliance's mission is to create a large and productive ecosystem for smart TV application development that gives manufacturers a faster path to more and better TV applications, enables developers to write applications once for many different platforms, and provides consumers with a rich source of content and services.
Hybrid Broadcast Broadband TV (HbbTV) is a global initiative aimed at harmonising the broadcast and broadband delivery of entertainment services to the end consumer through connected TVs and seta[euro]top boxes.
