WEST PALM BEACH, Fla., June 21 /PRNewswire/ -- National inhalant specialist Mark Groves will present a community workshop on inhalant abuse on Thursday, June 24 from 7 to 9 p.m. at Hanley-Hazelden Center at St. Mary's in West Palm Beach.

Groves, program director of Eden Children's and Family Services in Minneapolis, will present "Inhalant Abuse: Sniffing Up Trouble," sponsored by the Hazelden Institute, a division of the Hazelden Foundation. Groves will talk about the trends of inhalant abuse and what can be done to prevent and intervene upon this dangerous behavior.

The workshop is free and open to the public and will be delivered at the Kootz Education Center. It is for chemical dependency counselors, educators, prevention specialists, youth service workers, health care professionals, law enforcement officers, concerned parents and community members. Continuing education units are offered. To register for this workshop call 541-841-1119.

Inhalants are breathable chemicals that produce a mind-altering effect. They include solvents, paint, glue, fuels, nail polish, hair spray, felt-tip markers, butane, air fresheners, spray paint, and more. Inhalant abuse has been popular among young people, especially youth ages 7 to 17, since about 1960. About 21 percent of eighth-graders have used inhalants at least once in their lifetime, according to a 1997 study.

Inhalant abuse can be fatal and can cause long-term physical damage to the brain, nerve cells, heart, liver, kidneys, throat, nasal passageways and lungs. It often serves as a gateway drug to other harmful chemical use.

Groves has lectured on inhalants in the United States, Canada and Central America and has helped develop several inhalant abuse prevention and treatment programs. He is the author of an inhalant abuse prevention handbook for professionals and an inhalant abuse prevention curriculum for elementary and middle school students. He is a member of the National Inhalant Abuse Prevention Coalition.

Hanley-Hazelden Center at St. Mary's is a regional center of Hazelden, a nonprofit organization based in Center City, Minn. Hanley-Hazelden provides a full continuum of addiction recovery services for adults and family members.
