Have fun in sun for free; Banish the summer time blues without spending a penny. MARION McMULLEN finds out how to enjoy the summer on the cheap at some of Britain's top outdoor shows.

The Big Cheese, Caerphilly - July 26-28 A FREE weekend festival set in the shadow of Caerphilly Castle in south Wales and packed with entertainment, music, food and drink. Highlights include a fireworks display, funfair, a Tommy Cooper tent, re-enactment displays, the great cheese race and local delicacies. | RSC's Live At The Dell - Now until September 1 THE Royal Shakespeare Company's popular outdoor performance space in Stratford-upon-Avon has free performances of A Midsummer Night's Dream, Hamlet, The Comedy Of Errors and Macbeth from the likes of the York Shakespeare Project, Shooting Stars Theatre Company, The Handlebards and Oxford University Dramatic Society. | Stockton International Riverside Festival - August 1-4 FOUR days of street theatre, circus, dance, music and pyrotechnics from all over the world. Nearly every event is free, including roving rhinos on the high street, a creche for baby veg and tango passion in local gardens. | Summer In Southside - August 3/August 23-24 A DAY of free outdoor dance in areas around Birmingham Hippodrome on August 3. Performances run from noon until 7pm and include a humorous supermarket trolleys dance, a strolling street band and a tale of cocktails and dating in Don't Drink And Dance. It is followed later by two days of free circus events. | Cardiff Mas Carnival - August 10 THERE'S samba dancing, African drummers and free street entertainment in Wales' biggest and brightest carnival. The day includes a colourful parade through the city and hundreds of flamboyant costumes, giant puppets and mobile sculptures. | Liverpool International Music Festival - August 23-26.

THERE'S summer music in the city with top names like JLS, inset, Neil Young and Little Mix in concert. Alongside the ticketed music shows are lots of free performances at the city's Sefton Park including the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, jazz, reggae, folk, Latin and African music in the park, The Beatles Years, Soul II Soul and The Christians. | EAT! NewcastleGateshead - August 23 to September 8 SIXTEEN days celebrating the best food and drink produced and served in the North-east.

| Manchester Pride 2013 - August 23-26 MORE than 40 events across the city from theatre and performance to art and culture. The free parade runs across the city and is watched by tens of thousands each year. Manchester Pride's Big Weekend festival site is a ticketed event, with wristband sales going to LGBY charities. | Feel Good Festival - August 30-31 FREE weekend event in Rochdale including live music, cooking demonstrations and a food market. Celebrity chef Simon Rimmer, festival favourite Aazam Ahmad and Farooq Ahmed will be offering recipes to tempt the tastebuds. |
