Hateful crimes; emails &letters.

I HEAR that proposals to class offences against the mentally handicapped and physically disabled as 'hate crimes' are being considered by the Government, and quite rightly so. But why are we not also demanding that the escalating crimes of violence against the elderly and infirm among us be included in this category? The recent tragic death of frail 79-year-old Nellie Geraghty is a shocking example of such unforgivable offences. Nellie was found collapsed and unconscious in an alley near her home in Oldham after being attacked by muggers, still desperately clutching the broken handle of her stolen handbag which contained the ashes of her late husband Frank.

She never recovered from her injuries, and died later in hospital.

If this hateful crime does not cause an outpouring of public revulsion, and hopefully a change in the laws of this country, then we don't deserve to call ourselves a civilised society!
