Hat's certainly not new, your highness.

Princess Anne showed why she is a fashion also-ran at Ascot yesterday - by turning up in a 13-year-old hat.

Hundreds of women sported new hats for the society event of the year.

But the thrifty Princess Royal dug an old one out of her wardrobe instead.

She last wore the lemon yellow hat and silk skirt during an official visit to the Sudan in 1985.

She chatted in the Royal Enclosure to Brigadier Andrew Parker Bowles, ex-husband of her brother Charles's mistress Camilla.

Charles, who had arrived with the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh, didn't blink as Parker Bowles joined the royal party.

Tiggy Legge-Burke, ex-nanny to Princes William and Harry, was there too.

But it was the Queen Mother, at 97 the oldest ever living British royal, who drew the biggest cheers.

Thousands of racegoers applauded as her horsedrawn carriage arrived on the racecourse.

The Queen, arriving by carriage from nearby Windsor Castle, turned out at the paddock to chat to owners and trainers.

She has 22 horses in training and was keen not to miss the first race.

But even the horses could not prevent an outbreak of World Cup fever at the traditional-laden event.

Thousands of racegoers crowded round 23 wide screen TV sets at the Berkshire course to watch the Scotland match.

And even the Queen had a TV installed in the Royal Box to see the game.
