Hassan chairs meeting for donor states representatives on prisons' condition.
NNA - Minister of Interior and Municipalities, Raya Hassan, chaired on Wednesday a meeting for the ambassadors of the donor states and the representatives of international organizations, devoted to tackling the dossier of prisons in Lebanon.
The meeting was attended by UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator for Lebanon Philippe Lazzarini, Ambassadors of USA, European Union, Britain, Italy, Canada, Switzerland, Spain, the Netherlands, Sweden and Japan; alongside representatives of international organizations such as the UNDP, WHO and UNICEF.
In her word, Minister Hassan indicated that the meeting aimed to explain the reality and condition of prisons in Lebanon.
"Ever since I assumed my post at the Interior Ministry, I have placed the issue of prisons among my top priorities, as I am aware that this dossier is thorny and that it is being politicized," she said.
"Therefore, I wanted to set a roadmap to improve the condition of prisons in order to fulfill the minimum of human rights standards and to present a better image of jails in Lebanon to the international community," she added.
Accordingly, Hassan highlighted the importance of coordination between the ministries and the representatives of the international organizations and donor states.
