The Harmony Party took over power in Latvia's second largest city Daugavpils as Andrejs Elksnins, the leader of Harmony Party's list in recent local elections in Daugavpils, was elected the city's mayor on Tuesday June 27.
In Daugavpils, Harmony has formed the ruling coalition with local businessman Rihards Eigims' Our Party leaving former mayor Janis Lacplesis' Latgale Party in opposition.
All five councilors representing Harmony, as well as four councilors from coalition partner Our Party voted for Elksnins' appointment as the new Daugavpils mayor. All six councilors from the Latgale Party cast their votes for Lacplesis.
Eigims was elected Daugavpils' first Vice-Mayor.
Earlier, commenting on reports of the partnership negotiated between Harmony and Our Party in Daugavpils, Elksnins told LETA confirmed the news, saying that both parties share a similar program and the desire for sustainable and steady teamwork.
According to the official election results, Latgale Party won the local elections in Daugavpils with a slight margin, securing six seats on the city council.
Harmony won five mandates and Eigims' Our Party four mandates in Daugavpils.
Lacplesis was first elected Daugavpils mayor in 2009, but was removed from office in 2011. He became the city's mayor again after the 2013 local elections and had stayed in office until recently.
