Harking back to 'purer' times; VIEWPOINTS.

MR Dennis Coughlin has ably dealt with the matter of child abuse by Catholic priests in his letter (Viewpoints, March 23) and I do not need to add to it other than to say that much of it stems from enforced celibacy, a practice roundly condemned by the apostle Paul (1.Tim 4.1-3).

But Mr Paul Kokoski's letter (Viewpoints, March 23) makes extravagant claims that demand a reply.

Firstly, the Roman Catholic Church only came into existence after AD311 when Emperor Constantine declared Christianity the state religion, opening the floodgates for power grabbers.

It was a disastrous day for genuine believers who until then had endured fierce persecution.

To strengthen this domination, confession to a priest was introduced along with clerisy and priestcraft, vestments and altars. This saw the expansion of this wealth and power-seeking parody of the genuine church of Christ.

Mr Kokoski refers us to the apostle Peter. Peter explains that Christ Himself is the foundation rock of our faith. He tells us (John.1.42) all Christians are priests with direct access to heaven. When Peter wrote this, popes didn't exist, and the original Church was much healthier than the spurious set-up we see now.
