BEIRUT: Italian Ambassador to Lebanon Massimo Marotti Tuesday praised Prime Minister Saad Hariri's international affairs adviser, Karma Ekmekji, for joining the Network of Mediterranean Women Mediators. Marotti said in a statement that Ekmekji "will be a valuable asset for the group of capable international mediators from the extended Mediterranean region."

MWMN, the statement said, was launched in Rome in 2017. It focuses on the need to boost "the number of women involved in peacemaking efforts, and at facilitating the appointment of high-level women mediators at local and international level," according to MWMN's website. "It intends - in particular - to reduce and fill a networking capacity gap in the Mediterranean area."

The Italian Embassy statement said the network works closely with the United Nations and the U.N. Department for Political Affairs.

"MWMN enjoys now a new balanced and thoughtful Lebanese mediator able to understand the complex dimension of conflicts and to work to advance comprehensive and constructive solutions for dialogue in post conflict situations," Marotti said.

Ekmekji joins Justine Abi Saad at the German development agency GIZ, as the only mediators for Lebanon.
