Hardly the Life of Riley; Letters.

WITH regard to the obese being denied benefits, the idea the benefits system provides sufficient funds for a 'life of Riley' is laughable to anyone who has experienced the pittance received.

There are many reasons people become obese. Poverty can cause obesity because it may push individuals towards a bad diet. Unemployment also entails a loss of dignity that may lead to depression, comfort eating, alcohol dependence and a decrease in physical activity.

The possibility of decent wellpaid work would help many people to avoid an unhealthy lifestyle but gluttonous fat cats have ruined this. The jobs are simply not there. Therefore, the social safety net should not be targeted. Ian Lavery MP is right. To punish someone because of his or her physical appearance is fascism.
