Happy Mondays for anglers at Barston Lakes; HOOK, LINE AND SINKER WITH GARETH PURNELL.

Byline: GARETH PURNELL

ANGLERS attending the Monday afternoon/evening open matches at Barston Lakes have been enjoying some top sport.

The latest match saw the top five weigh in over 90lb with the lowest weight just under 50lb and an average of more than 80lb per angler.

Mick Bull won the day with 127-14-0 from peg 15, a bag of fish taken on the Method with pellet hook bait.

Suzi Smith weighed in 104-14-0 for second from peg 19 - she fished pole at six metres plus paste in the margins, with Gaz Wood in third sticking to pole and paste for most of the match for 102-0-0 from peg 7. The next open is on July 14 with the draw at 2.30pm in the clubhouse.

WITH the sun blazing down from clear skies over the weekend, anglers fishing the Evesham Festival qualifiers on the Warwickshire Avon braced themselves for some tough fishing.

But, surprisingly, some of the venue's big bream were prepared to have a go and Nick Cowling had four of them on the flat float from peg 61 for his winning 15-6-0 weight in the Shakespeare Championship.

In the weekend's Wychavon Qualifier at Evesham, Alan Stephen's 9lb 15oz barbel, taken from peg 8, was enough to secure the win on its own, helping him to a 12-10-0 total.

MIDLANDER Darren Cox is the 8/1 joint favourite with the bookmakers, along with Tommy Pickering and Nathan Watson, for this weekend's PS30,000 winnertakes-all televised Fish 'O' Mania final.

MATCH anglers found Moorlands Farm in excellent form over the weekend, with over 150lb needed to win all three of the open matches.

On Friday, Lee Boden took 157-3-0 from peg 19 on Bank Pool. Saturday's open on Meadow and Island saw the top three all weigh in over 100lb, Paul Little taking the win with 189-4-0 from Meadow peg 8. Sunday's match was the best of all, with 110lb needed to make the frame and Mal Watson winning the day from peg 35 on Meadow with 191-12-0.

EARLSWOOD'S Yachter Lake continues to provide top bream fishing and attract big fields to the matches as a result.

Despite the conditions being far from ideal for bream and skimmers on Sunday, the top four anglers all took over 25lb to the scales with winner Peter Millard weighing in with an excellent 53-12-0.
