Happy B'day to Mu; Each week Juice FM's Anton Powers tips a track for the top. Today the Powers prediction is the Cahill remix of Boom Boom Pow by Black Eyed Peas.
WHY have one birthday party when you can have three? That seems to be thinking behind Magnet favourite Mu's first anniversary celebrations.
For those who have not yet come across the events, Mu was thrust upon Liverpool last May by the team behind one of the city's favourite underground hangouts Django's Riff to, in their own words: "bring to Liverpool the sort of music that was not being represented." And with brass bands and reggae artists regularly entertaining the Mu faithful, it is safe to say they are achieving their aim.
"We book the stuff that other promoters wouldn't touch," jokes one of Mu's founders 28-year-old Niraj Gohel.
"It's a really diverse mix. We do a lot of hip hop and world music. We have had DJs like DJ Assault from Detroit on and bands like The Apples, a 10-piece Israeli funk band.
"We try not to put any limitations on the night. The only rule is that it's got to be really good." The birthday party marathon begins next weekend with a bash at the Magnet featuring some heavy dub sounds from one of the biggest names in the genre, The Mad Professor.
"He is a legendary club producer," London-born and Texas-raised Niraj explains. "He has been around since the 80s and is probably most famous for his remix of Massive Attack's Protection." After that, at the second party on May 8 at the Zanzibar, Mu present the internationally-acclaimed Youngblood Brass Band all the way from America.
"They have a legendary cult following," says Niraj. "If Rage Against the Machine were a brass band this would be what they would sound like!" Then finally, on May 14, the party returns to the Magnet with an appearance from a man who needs little introduction - Ninja Tunes pioneer DJ Vadim who will be offering up his unique experimental take on dubstep and electronica.
And all for just pounds 2 admission. Says Niraj: "He is one of the most influential characters we have seen for a long time and it will be just pounds 2 in as a big thank you to everyone who has supported us over the last three years." . Mu's first birthday celebrations: May 2 at the Magnet, doors open 10pm-4am , entry pounds 10; May 8 at the Zanzibar, doors open 10pm-3am, entry pounds 10 and May 14 at the Magnet, doors open 10pm-3am, entry just pounds 2 on the door..
