Hang up your parka, take off your boots, store your skis A great day on the slopes can end on a down note if stowing skis and boots and drying snow-dampened clothing are too big a hassle. Aspen architect T. Michael Manchester designed the long, narrow air-lock entry in this Snowmass, Colorado, home to streamline the apres-ski process. It offers ideas useful eve if your front door doesn't open on a ski slope.

Owners enter this room through the garage or from outdoors. Embossed rubber flooring provides a low-maintenance, nonskid surface.

Snowy skis go in racks that line the walls: tails sit in V-shaped grooves cut in the tops of 1-1/4- by 4-inch maple sils screwed to the floor, and the skis lean up against 1-1/4- by 3-inch maple crossbars inset with strip magnets (usually sold for cutlery). The magnets hold the skis' metal edges. Ski poles simply perch on the top lip of the crossbars, and hang by the edges of their plastic handgrips.

Further into the room are changing benches, and beyond the benches a row of pegs holds damp parkas. On the opposite wall is a floor-to-ceiling storage system made of laminate-faced high-density particle board trimmed with maple. It's divided into a grid of cubbyholes; upper cubbies hold gloves, hats, goggles, and other accessories. Inside each floor-level cubby, an electrical outlet is available for plug-in boot warmers.
