Half of electric blankets unsafe.

MORE than half the electric blankets tested in North Wales recently were dangerous.

The electrical safety tests were offered free to pensioners by trading standards officers,in conjunction with the fire service, during the run up to National Consumer Week.

A spokeswoman for Denbighshire County Council said: ``A worrying 51 per cent of the blankets were found to be unsafe.''

Nationally, old or damaged blankets cause more than 5,000 fires a year, with an average of 20 deaths and 100 injuries.

The unsafe blankets will be disposed of and the owners have been offered discounts for purchasing replacements.

Denbighshire Cabinet member Councillor Elwyn Edwards said: ``These checks have shown that there are an alarming number of potentially dangerous electric blankets around.''

Trading standards officers recommend that anyone worried about the safety of their electric blanket should consider sending it back to the manufacturer to be checked, or replace it if it is damaged or old.
