Half of all drivers text at the wheel; ROADS.

ALMOST half of drivers in Europe admit to reading texts while behind the wheel, a study has found.

A survey in Germany, Spain, France, Great Britain, Italy and Russia found Italian motorists were the worst offenders.

We fared better though as just 40% of Irish people admitted to reading texts while driving.

The study by Ford showed a high amount of motorists use phones while driving.

Christof Kellerwessel of Ford said: "Smartphones have so quickly become an essential part of many people's day that it's hard to imagine life without them.

"However, texts can be a distraction for drivers, so the benefit of a system that can read messages aloud from smartphones is obvious."
