Haia official, cop suspended for fatal car chase.

Riyadh: Arab NewsA court in Baha has ordered a four-year suspension in service of a police officer and an official of the Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice for their role in a 2012 car chase that killed a Saudi and injured three members of his family.

The two defendants were charged with mistreatment and misuse of power.

The victim's family accused the Haia squad and accompanying police patrol of causing the accident and leaving the scene without helping the victims.

Saleh Al-Ghamdi, the victim's uncle, said the judge informed the family that an administrative ruling had been issued against the defendants and that they would be given one month to file their objections before the ruling is referred to a legislative court.

The defendants said they were satisfied with the ruling.

The victim's family, however, said it will appeal the ruling. Al-Ghamdi said the family has endured severe psychological turmoil in the aftermath of the tragedy. "One of his children has been incapacitated and his wife had to have her right arm amputated," he said. "The family lost its main breadwinner. They also continued to travel back and forth to attend court hearings, only to find out that such a light verdict was issued against these men." The victim's wife said she would write to Baha Gov. Prince Mishari bin Saud to refer the case to the general court.
