Habitat for Humanity of Greater Memphis, Inc.

How do you rate the overall livability of Memphis when you yourself do not have a decent or affordable place to live? This is the dilemma that inspired a group of individuals to form Habitat for Humanity of Greater Memphis in 1983. This organization is "dedicated to building low-cost housing in partnership with churches, corporations, businesses, volunteers, civic foundations, and other groups to eradicate substandard housing." Business Perspectives asked Naomi Dyson, Habitat's Director of Development/Communications, the following questions concerning Habitat for Humanity of Greater Memphis' role in the quality of life in Memphis.

Habitat for Humanity of Greater Memphis, Inc., is an ecumenical Christian housing ministry dedicated to eradicating substandard housing by building simple, decent homes for those in need.

Affordable, safe, decent housing provides an economic impact for the city and county by increasing the tax roles through homeownership, rebuilding communities that were once deserted and a blight on our city, and providing hope for the children of needy families.

Habitat's vision for the year 1999 is to complete 35 homes, bringing the total to 200 homes completed since the inception of Habitat for Humanity of Greater Memphis, Inc. A strategic alliance with other groups addressing this issue will be to eliminate 17 percent of the estimated 68,000 substandard residential units in Memphis and Shelby County by the year 2027.

Corporate participation is essential to eliminating substandard housing and benefits the potential workforce that many businesses draw from. Corporations can support housing by funding Habitat homes and using the recycled mortgages to build more homes. The construction of a home by groups in the workplace can be used as a team building exercise while leaving a standing object that helps a needy family. Some corporations in Memphis and other cities have participated in home building with a curriculum specific to their companies.

On Friday, April 23, 1999, Habitat for Humanity of Greater Memphis will host the 1999 Annual Housewarming Gala at the Memphis Marriott (2625 Thousand Oaks Boulevard) from 8:00 p.m. until 1:00 a.m. This annual event allows volunteers to show their support of and celebrate with those who have become new homeowners through Habitat for Humanity.
