HYUNDAI HELPS ENVIRONMENT -- REMOVES CFCS FROM AIR CONDITIONING SYSTEMS

FOUNTAIN VALLEY, Calif., July 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Hyundai Motor America announced today that the air conditioning systems in its 1994 Elantra, Scoupe and Excel models will no longer use the CFC (chlorofluorocarbon) refrigerant R-12, commonly known as Freon. Instead, the air conditioning systems will be charged with R-134a, a CFC-free refrigerant substitute that, according to scientists, does not result in ozone depletion.
"Technically, we could have waited several more years to make this change," says Eric Bondus, Hyundai's national manager of product support. "However, the environmental benefits of converting to an R-134a system were compelling enough to initiate the change now. This is just one of many steps Hyundai is making to improve the environmental quality of its products."
Hyundai had been exploring alternatives to CFC air conditioning systems for several years in response to growing concern internationally and in the United States that CFCs contribute to ozone depletion. The United States has banned the production of CFCs after Jan. 1, 1996, though it will not restrict the use of CFCs in products and manufacturing.
The Elantra, Scoupe and Excel represent about 90 percent of Hyundai's total sales in the United States. Air conditioning systems in Hyundai's mid-size Sonata will receive the new R-134a system later this year.
