CHICAGO, Feb. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Hyundai Motor America today unveiled its first-ever sizzling SunScoupe convertible at the Chicago Auto Show. Designed by Hyundai's California Design Studio and coengineered by Globe Engineering, the fun-to-drive, open air new vehicle from Hyundai, offers sleek, aerodynamic styling and an automatic power operated top. All this, and it is expected to be priced at a manufacturer's suggested retail price of under $13,000.
"The engineering challenge was to develop an efficient design to support a cost-effective open-air vehicle and provide an attractive package," said Doug Mazza, executive vice president and chief operating officer, Hyundai Motor America.
The convertible top stack design is world class. The power operated top is actuated by an electro-hydraulic system controlled by a single-latch release system for user convenience. The conversion net weight is less than 50 pounds. The top folds and stacks neatly to provide a spacious rear seat, unlike many competitors. And, when folded down, the addition of a semirigid tonneau cover produces a smart, sleek appearance flush with the belt line. The top sports a rich Cambria cloth material usually found on more expensive convertibles.
"The Scoupe convertible is positioned as a highly styled, affordable vehicle that combines the thrill of open-air driving with the practicality of a coupe for today's smart, lifestyle-conscious buyers," said Russ Reeder, director of product and strategic planning.
Key prospects include young, college-educated men and women seeking image-defining personal transportation. Often, they trade-up from a subcompact or other sporty coupe. SunScoupe will be acquired by consumers seeking a niche-type vehicle that is truly open-air, affordable, yet highly styled. Generally, the buyers of SunScoupe are more likely to be female.
The front-wheel drive, 1.5-liter, SOHC 12-valve, 92 horsepower, Alpha engine offers efficient, crisp power and acceleration as well as good fuel economy. The 2 + 2 configuration is available with four speed electronically controlled automatic transmission, it has multiport electronic fuel injection, sport-tuned suspension with variable rate springs and power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering. Power assisted dual-diagonal front disc and rear drum brakes make for precision stopping. The sport-tuned suspension offers excellent ride and handling characteristics.
The youth market, ages 20-35, has been booming with high-profile audio systems of which Pyle, who provides SunScoupe's amplifier and speakers, is a leader in the aftermarket. The AM/FM electronic tuning radio comes with compact disc and cassette. It has a 200-watt multifunction 6-channel power amplifier with 14-band parametric equalization. There are nine speakers including one 10-inch dual channel Toobz(TM) Subwoofer.
Also included are rear mounted 6-inch coaxial speakers and 4-inch coaxial instrument panel speakers with 1-inch voice coils for low and mid-frequencies and composite-domed liquid-cooled NeoDome(TM) tweeters for high frequencies. All speakers include Polymer Laminate Cones and exclusive IronMax(TM) motors with exceptional power handling capability.
Inside the fully carpeted four-seater is a six-way adjustable lumbar support driver's seat, ergonomic control layout with full instrumentation, sporty cloth seat trim and a rear 60/40 split fold- down seat. Remote trunk and fuel door releases, lockable glove box and a leather wrapped steering wheel are just some of the amenities offered in contrast to more spartan convertible interiors on the market.
Grabbing the road are 15-inch sporty, five-spoke allow wheels, and P195/60R/15 steel-belted radial tires for maximum performance, appearance and safety. Aerodynamic flush headlamps, bodycolor cladding and rocker molding, dual bodycolor mirrors, tinted glass and integrated fog lamps all add to an exciting exterior.
The SunScoupe redefines the open-air concept as an affordable, and represents the commitment of the Hyundai California Design studio to provide stylish, fun-to-drive North American cars to the marketplace. For those who enjoy the excitement of the open road, there is no better value.
