HYPERDESK DISTRIBUTED OBJECT MANAGEMENT SYSTEM TO SUPPORT UNIVEL'S UNIXWARE

 HYPERDESK DISTRIBUTED OBJECT MANAGEMENT SYSTEM
 TO SUPPORT UNIVEL'S UNIXWARE
WESTBOROUGH, Mass., June 9 /PRNewswire/ -- HyperDesk Corporation announced today that the HyperDesk Distributed Object Management System (HD-DOMS) will support UnixWare from Univel, reaffirming its commitment to provide interoperable, open distributed computing solutions for industry standard platforms. HyperDesk is the only UnixWare early access developer that offers distributed object management solutions, a key to open distributed computing.
Univel has provided HyperDesk and other select software and hardware vendors with early versions of its software to allow these companies to begin developing products that support UnixWare. Univel's UnixWare family of products will incorporate the most powerful, user-friendly, graphics-based UNIX operating system available today, while providing seamless integration to NetWare.
The HD-DOMS combines a suite of advanced software tools and services with an object-oriented application framework that enables software developers to build open distributed applications. Using HyperDesk-based applications, users can transparently access data, resources and other applications on the network, regardless of their location or implementation.
HD-DOMS tools and services are built around the Object Management Group's Object Request Broker (ORB) standard, the central communication and integration manager for software objects. HD-DOMS, the first OMG-compliant distributed object management system, enables developers to define, build, store, and modify distributed objects dynamically, allowing network-wide reusability and extensibility at runtime. Because HD-DOMS supports industry standard remote procedure calls, network protocols, and operating systems, developers receive the benefit of a single, standard applications programming interface -- the ORB -- to build open distributed applications. HD-DOMS is portable across a broad range of PC, workstation, and server platforms supporting MS-Windows and Unix Motif.
"By supporting UnixWare, HyperDesk is continuing its mission and commitment to offer an industry standard open distributed computing solution which supports as many hardware and software platforms as possible," said Jerry Levin, vice chairman of HyperDesk. "HyperDesk is an independent software vendor, providing developers and end-users with a single, integrated solution that works across a broad range of platforms."
"We are excited about working with HyperDesk, a company that has taken a lead in making open distributed computing a reality through the use of distributed object management technology," said Joel Appelbaum, president and CEO of Univel. "HyperDesk DOMS technology, a critical element of open distributed computing, will help bring distributed object management -- and open distributed computing -- to UnixWare desktop computer users."
"Open distributed computing has emerged as a critical issue for UNIX users in networked environments -- the same kind of users we envision for UnixWare -- and HyperDesk DOMS represents a breakthrough in this area," said Roel Pieper, president and CEO of UNIX System Laboratories Inc. "HyperDesk is an important partner for Univel in its efforts to bring powerful UNIX applications to desktop users."
"UnixWare provides users with a robust, yet easy-to-use PC desktop Unix environment," said Herb Osher, president of HyperDesk. "HyperDesk's support of UnixWare is part of our continuing commitment to provide freedom of choice on the desktop."
Univel, founded in December of 1991, is a partnership between Novell, Inc. and UNIX System Laboratories, Inc. The company is chartered with growing the UNIX system and network computing market by providing open system software solutions for distributed enterprise-wide computing. Univel's UnixWare family of products will incorporate the most powerful, user-friendly, graphics-based UNIX operating system available today while providing seamless integration to NetWare.
HyperDesk Corporation is the emerging leader in the development of standards-based distributed object management software and tools to create open, distributed computing environments. HyperDesk products enable professional application developers to give computer users simplified access to information -- wherever it resides-- across diverse, distributed computing environments. An independent software company, HyperDesk is committed to developing, marketing and supporting distributed object management products across a broad range of hardware and software platforms. HyperDesk is headquartered in Westborough, Mass., and maintains offices in North America and Europe.
