DORADO, Puerto Rico, Nov. 20 ~PRNewswire~ -- Golfers at the PGA Senior Tour may be striving for a hole in one, but dentists at the free Children's Dental Clinic at the Hyatt Dorado Beach Resort will be trying to get rid of holes -- in teeth, that is.
The Hyatt Dorado Beach, in cooperation with the Senior PGA Tour Tournament, is sponsoring a three-day clinic from Dec. 7 to 9, which will provide approximately $30,000 in comprehensive dental care free of charge to 120 underprivileged children. Services will range from simple cleaning and fluoride treatments to cavity fillings, crowns, extractions and even medicating abscessed teeth.
The free clinic is the dream child of Dr. Richard Garza of Austin, Texas, and has been provided at 10 PGA Tour tournament sites during 1992. Garza, who has seen hundreds of disadvantaged children in his Texas office, approached golfer Chi Chi Rodriguez in 1989 at the Legends of Golf Tournament of assistance with promoting a charity children's clinic. Rodriguez, who couldn't afford a toothbrush when he was a child, wanted to be sure that poor children received better dental care, and helped Garza develop a plan in conjunction with Senior PGA Tour Tournaments. Since then, the program has taken off, gaining support from the Senior PGA Tour and individual golfers.
"It's a different atmosphere than a typical visit to the dental office," says Garza. "Kids visit with to each other and the doctors, as well. There's a lot more laughing and joking while the dentistry is being performed."
Eighteen volunteer dentist, 18 dental assistants and six reception personnel from the local area will run the mobile dental clinic. The dental volunteers were identified and organized by the Puerto Rican Dental Association, and the dentists are all members of the association.
Senior Tour golfers are expected to drop by and visit with the children at the clinic on Tuesday, Dec. 8, at 2 p.m. The young patients are selected in advance with the assistance of local agencies.
"Hyatt staff has been tremendous," says Garza. "They have assisted with identifying needy children and scheduling visits in groups of 10. Hyatt housekeeping will even assist with cleaning the carpets in the dental clinic trailer, which is being transferred to Puerto Rico by Roadway Express free of charge.
"I see a lot of these children in my practice and identified a tremendous need for some charitable care for underprivileged children," says Garza. "The clinic is unique because it delivers comprehensive dental care to the underprivileged, unlike screening programs in schools where they identify the need (cavities), but do not fill the void."
"It's not just the kids who benefit but the families, doctors and all of the other volunteers. It's a fairly charged experience, Grateful parents, with tears of joy in their eyes, thank volunteers for their services, and kids routinely give the doctors a hug before leaving the clinic. It creates a nice situation which highlights people helping people. Hundreds of cavities will be filled and hundreds of healthier smiles will be created."
"Hyatt is funding the entire project in Puerto Rico as part of its continuing corporate philosophy of community involvement and service," says Victor Lopez, regional vice president for Hyatt Resorts Caribbean. "We are delighted to sponsor such a worthwhile activity and bring brighter smiles to Puerto Rico."
Children and volunteers will even receive free "Healthier Smiles Provided by Hyatt and the Senior Tour Championship" t-shirts.
By year's end, the Children's PGA Tour Dental Clinic will have treated approximately 1,000 children and provided $250,000 in dental care.
