HUTCHENS NAMED SVP, REGIONAL EXECUTIVE AT SOUTHERN NATIONAL

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C., Feb. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Southern National Bank of North Carolina today named Gay Nell Hutchens, the former chief operating officer and corporate secretary of the recently acquired First Federal Savings Bank in Winston-Salem, senior vice president and regional executive officer of the Northwest Region. Ms. Hutchens, with more than 30 years experience in the financial industry, becomes the first female in Southern National's history to hold the office of regional executive.
The announcement coincides with the restructuring of Southern National's Northwest Region and the creation of a new western region. Southern National's merger in January with First Federal, the largest acquisition in its history, and last year's merger with Workmen's Bancorp of Mount Airy, its second largest acquisition, has given Southern National a significant presence in the northwestern part of the state.
"Approximately one-third of our total North Carolina deposits are now located in this area," said North Carolina bank President Gary E. Carlton. "It was necessary for us to divide that section of the state into two regions."
Fred Groce, who has served as regional executive of the Northwest Region from Winston-Salem since 1988, will now direct the operations of Southern National's newest region, the West Region. Both the West and Northwest Regions will be based in Winston-Salem.
Southern National will benefit from Ms. Hutchens' 32 years with First Federal where she worked her way up from her first job as a teller in 1960 to the company's No. 2 position. As the senior administrative officer of First Federal since 1979, Ms. Hutchens directed the operations of lending, savings, accounting, branch coordinating and administration. She holds a Master in Business Administration degree from the Wake Forest University Graduate School of Management.
"We're fortunate to have someone of her breadth of experience and leadership," Carlton said. "She's very well known around this part of the state and has a reputation for getting things done."
Ms. Hutchens not only became one of the top ranking women executives in the state while at First Federal where she was a director since 1985, she worked as well at becoming an integral and contributing member of her native Winston-Salem home. She currently chairs the Metropolitan YMCA of Greater Winston-Salem, is co- chairperson of the Leadership Winston-Salem Alumni Council and serves as president of the Babcock Graduate School of Management of Wake Forest University Alumni Council.
"Community involvement is extremely important to me; I take it very seriously and enjoy it very much," said Ms. Hutchens, who was recognized in 1991 as the Distinguished Business Woman of the Year by the Piedmont Triad Professional Women's Development Council.
Other activities Ms. Hutchens is currently involved with include: treasurer of the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Public Education Fund; board member of Data Max Corporation (formerly Retail Merchants Association); finance committee of the Girl Scout Council; and committee member of Marketing/Retail for Forsyth Technical Community College.
Ms. Hutchens is a member of Fairview Moravian Church in Winston-Salem. She has one daughter.
