HURRICANE CENTER DIRECTOR TO JOIN ALAMO AND HABITAT FOR HUMANITY IN WELCOMING NEW HOMEOWNERS TO FLORIDA CITY

FLORIDA CITY, Fla., July 7 /PRNewswire/ -- What could be more reassuring to new homeowners in this community than to receive the keys to their new homes from none other than the National Hurricane Center director himself, Dr. Robert Sheets. In an unprecedented ceremony, Sheets will hand the keys to new Habit for Humanity homeowners as part of the "Alamo Key To Their Heart" celebration at 10 a.m., Thursday, July 15 in Florida City.
Sheets and Florida City Mayor Otis Wallace will take part in the dedication of the 13-house Habitat for Humanity site in which the Alamo House is located. The new homes, which were constructed entirely by volunteers from the two organizations and the homeowner families, were designed to withstand the force of any major storm. Last year, Habitat for Humanity homes in South Florida received critical acclaim for withstanding the force of Hurricane Andrew.
As part of the ceremony, Sheets will give the homeowners their keys while Habitat's master builder Nevil Eastwood points out specific construction procedures that contribute to the hurricane-ready status of Habitat homes. In addition, Alamo representatives will hand out flashlights to homeowners and neighbors to assist them in their preparations for the current hurricane season.
Alamo Rent A Car, the largest independently owned and operated car rental company in the United States, donated $100,000 in December to Habitat for Humanity, which was split between the three hurricane hit areas of Homestead, Louisiana and Kauai. Alamo volunteers built the Alamo House, located on N.W. 13 Street in Florida City, and also assisted in building the other homes.
"Alamo staff members actually participated in the building process, and the experience gave us all a sense of pride and accomplishment," stated Alamo President Charles D. Platt. "It's gratifying to work together with an organization like Habitat for Humanity to help this community rebuild. Today, thirteen new homeowners have seen a dream come true, and Alamo is thrilled to be a part of it."
Gene Crumley, director of Habitat for Humanity's Southeast region, echoed Platt's feelings. "The work and dedication of companies like Alamo to the rebuild effort has been a big step forward for all of us."
Alamo currently serves over 10 million travelers a year through 106 high-volume locations in the United States, plus 22 international locations in the United Kingdom and Switzerland.
As a concerned corporate citizen, Alamo Rent A Car is the only major car rental firm in the country to move to a logo-free fleet nationwide, and is the first car rental company in the United States to provide every renter with a Traveler's Safety Alert.
