HURRICANE ANDREW RESTORATION OVERVIEW

 HURRICANE ANDREW RESTORATION OVERVIEW
MIAMI, Sept. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Comments from FPL Chairman and CEO

Jim Broadhead:
-- FPL this morning has reduced the number of customer accounts
without power to an estimated 230,000, all of them located in
Dade County. Eight days after having 1.4 million customer
accounts out of service, FPL has restored approximately 85
percent of the homes and businesses affected by Hurricane Andrew.
-- We returned to normal operations in Broward County on Monday
afternoon. If customers there should be without power for any
reason, we recommend they call FPL.
-- In Dade County, however, we are still requesting that customers
avoid calling us unless they need to report an emergency
condition, such as a downed, sparking power line. We are aware
of areas where power is still out, and we have more than 3,300
crew members working in every area of Dade County. We continue
to ship enormous quantities of equipment and material here. As
an example, almost 10,000 wooden poles have been used to date --
and we expect up to 20,000 more will be needed.
-- FPL continues to stress safety as the first priority for our
customers and employees as more people are moving about the area.
We urge everyone to avoid downed lines of any kind, to supervise
children closely and to hire licensed electricians for work on
their home and business electrical systems. The proper use of
portable generators also is important to protect neighbors and
utility crews from the threat of electricity flowing out of a
household and into the power grid.
-- Before Bob Marshall and Bill Hamilton discuss FPL's restoration
efforts in greater detail, we would like to repeat our appeal
that motorists minimize their trips on Dade County's roads. This
will facilitate the movement of equipment and crews needed to
 complete the restoration.
