HURRICANE ANDREW DEVASTATION TO EXTEND STRONG MARKET DEMAND FOR ELCOR'S RESIDENTIAL SHINGLES

HURRICANE ANDREW DEVASTATION TO EXTEND STRONG MARKET DEMAND FOR
 ELCOR'S RESIDENTIAL SHINGLES
DALLAS, Aug. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Elcor Corporation (NYSE: ELK) said today that the devastation created by Hurricane Andrew in Southern Florida and portions of Louisiana will add to the existing strong demand for its Elk Prestique(R) premium laminated fiberglass asphalt shingles.
"The strong demand for our Elk Prestique shingles should continue for at least 12-18 months and require peak manufacturing levels over this period. Further, this high level of demand for our Prestique shingles should strengthen prices and favorably impact quarterly results throughout all of fiscal 1993, which began July 1," said Roy E. Campbell, president.
Demand for Elk Prestique shingles was already at a very high level prior to Hurricane Andrew as a result of a large backlog of reroofing work throughout the country and additional reroofing demand resulting from massive hail damage to roofs in major storms earlier in the year in Dallas and Arlington, Texas; Orlando, Fla.; Kansas City, Kan.; Colorado Springs, Colo.; and other areas in New Mexico and Oklahoma.
Elcor's core business subsidiary, Elk Corporation, is a leading manufacturer of premium laminated fiberglass asphalt shingles, the fastest growing residential roofing market segment. Texas, California and Florida are the largest states for use of premium laminated shingles in the nation. Elk is a market share leader for premium laminated shingles in these states and throughout the Sunbelt from coast to coast.
Elcor manufactures roofing products and industrial products. Each of Elcor's principal operating subsidiaries is the leader or one of the leaders within its particular market. Its common stock is listed on the New York Stock Exchange (ticker symbol: ELK).
Elcor's roofing products facilities are located in Tuscaloosa, Ala.; Dallas and Ennis, Texas. Its industrial products facilities are located in Cleveland, Ohio; Dallas, Lufkin, Midland, and Waco, Texas.
