HURRICANE ANDREW CLAIMS DISPUTES TO BE ADMINISTERED BY THE AMERICAN ARBITRATION ASSOCIATION

NEW YORK, Jan. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- The American Arbitration Association (AAA) today announced it has been selected by the Florida Department of Insurance to administer its Hurricane Claims Facilitation Program, newly created to expedite and facilitate resolution of unsettled homeowners' claims arising out of Hurricane Andrew's late- August sweep across the state.
In an effort to provide a timely response and relief to affected residents, the Florida Department of Insurance has established an on- site facility, in Homestead, Fla., for claims facilitation conferences utilizing certified mediators from the Dade County area. The program was designed in cooperation with local government leaders, insurance carriers and representatives of the Dade County Bar Association. Homeowners and insurers will have the opportunity to resolve disputed claims through a claims facilitation conference, similar to a mediation.
Mark Buckstein, executive vice president of the Association, offered that "the American Arbitration Association applauds the state of Florida's prudent and compassionate decision to resolve these matters without the complication and delay which would have been inherent in the litigated pursuit of these claims."
Since 1926, the American Arbitration Association, a not-for-profit public service organization, has been the preeminent leader in the field of alternative dispute resolution (ADR). Through its network of 35 regional offices across the United States, the AAA, with a national panel of over 50,000 neutrals, designs and administers arbitration, mediation and other dispute settlement procedures and promotes the advancement of alternative methods of dispute resolution through its educational and training programs, publications and membership services. Over 62,000 labor and commercial cases were filed in 1991, 46 percent of which involved insurance claims.
