HURRICANE ANDREW CELLULAR ONE SERVICE UPDATE, AUG. 24, 1992
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla., Aug. 24 /PRNewswire/ -- McCaw Cellular Communications, which does business in Florida as Cellular One, is providing an update on its cellular system performance for customers and emergency service agencies in the South Florida area.
Cellular One is asking its customers to refrain from using their cellular phones except in emergency situations because the system is being utilized extensively by the American Red Cross and the National Guard.
The Cellular One system withstood some damage from Hurricane Andrew, but overall is performing well,.
The Miami mobile switching office of the system is currently operating on generator power and can operate indefinitely. Twelve of the system's 60 cell sites are experiencing problems. In the meantime, customer calls are being handled at the company's Orlando business office. Customers can dial 611 SEND from their cellular phones for assistance.
Cellular One will continue to provide updates as information becomes available.
