HUNTINGTON BANKS' NEW BAND ORGAN TO DEBUT

HUNTINGTON BANKS' NEW BAND ORGAN TO DEBUT
TROY, Mich., Nov. 26 /PRNewswire/ -- Huntington Banks of Michigan's

new band organ will make its debut in the Mount Clemens Christmas parade on Friday, Nov. 29. The parade, which will begin at Gratiot Avenue and Church Street, will proceed through the downtown area. It is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. The next day, the band organ will be in the Warren Christmas parade, which will begin at Van Dyke Avenue and Martin Road at 10 a.m.
The 125-pipe Huntington instrument is a modern replica of the automatic pipe organ music machines which first became popular in this country at amusement parks and traveling circuses during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The music for most old-time merry-go-rounds was provided by a mechanical band organ.
In addition to its wooden pipes, the new organ is also equipped with a snare drum, a bass drum, cymbals and chimes. A miniature military bandmaster in a period uniform stands in front of the pipes and uses his baton to keep time with the music. Elaborate carved wooden facades, reminiscent of those which covered the complicated machinery of early band organs, have been placed on both the front and back of the organ's case.
Antique band organs were operated by a complex system of hand- operated pumpsticks, bellows, crankshafts and levers. As electricity became more widely available around the turn of the century, strong backs and arms were gradually replaced by electric motors.
In contrast, the new Huntington organ utilizes a small electric blower and electronic switches to make its music. Like the original instruments, however, a paper music roll, similar to those used in player pianos, controls its operations. The organ's "repertoire" consists of more than 975 different compositions, ranging from Gay '90s tunes to Christmas carols, on 96 rolls.
The Huntington band organ has been mounted in a specially designed trailer with its own self-contained power supply and is towed by a light truck. It was designed and custom built for the bank by the Stinson Pipe Organ Company of Bellefontaine, Ohio.
The bank will make the band organ available without charge to participate in parades or provide background music at all types of civic and community activities in its three-county market area. Organizations that wish to make arrangements for band organ appearances may do so by calling the bank's Marketing and Public Relations Department at 313-362-5000 during regular business hours.
Huntington Banks of Michigan, with total assets of $1.3 billion, operates 38 full-service banking offices in Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties. It is an affiliate of Huntington Bancshares Incorporated of Columbus, Ohio.
