CHESTERFIELD, Mo., Oct. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Huntco Inc. (NASDAQ: HUNT), a Chesterfield-based intermediate steel processor, today announced that it will locate its sixth steel processing facility in or around Chattanooga, Tenn. on the Tennessee Tombigbee Waterway.
The project will include a newly constructed building and the purchase of a new, high speed, sheet and plate cut-to-length line capable of handling flat rolled carbon steel up to 96 inches wide. The initial, major processing line for this facility will be very similar to the lines currently operated by the company at its Catoosa, Okla. and Blytheville, Ark. steel processing facilities. The line will be supported by newly acquired overhead cranes and other material handling equipment. Huntco anticipates that the cost of this project will be approximately $6.0 million, which will be funded by cash on hand over the balance of the current fiscal year, and that the new facility will commence operations in May 1994. The specific location in the Chattanooga area has been narrowed to two primary locations, both of which have direct access to the Tennessee Tombigbee Waterway. The company expects to finalize the site location within the next two weeks.
Commenting further on the location of the new processing center, B. D. Hunter, chairman of the board and chief executive officer, stated, "Chattanooga, Tennessee is an ideal location for our sixth processing center, consistent in all respects with our long-term expansion strategy, located on the inland waterway at a site which can be economically supplied by all of our existing major steel suppliers. In addition and most exciting, the market area which this facility will service will allow us to more fully serve many existing customers as well as gain access to many new customers, and will include basically the entire Interstate 85 corridor from Mobile, Alabama to Raleigh - Durham, North Carolina as well as the Interstate 75 corridor from Lexington, Kentucky to Tampa, Florida, two of the most rapidly expanding industrial corridors in the United States."
Huntco is a major, intermediate steel processor, specializing in the processing of flat rolled carbon steel and is also a leading manufacturer of compressed air cylinders.
