HUGHES-AVICOM WILL PROVIDE PERSONAL VIDEO SYSTEMS
 FOR SWISSAIR FIRST-CLASS PASSENGERS
GLENDORA, Calif., Oct. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Hughes-Avicom International has received an order from Swissair for an in-flight passenger entertainment system that will provide a personal video monitor at each seat in the first-class section.
The order, valued at approximately $1.8 million, calls for an advanced audio and video system for each aircraft in Swissair's fleet of 17 Boeing 747s and McDonnell Douglas MD-11s. Deliveries are scheduled to begin late this year, with all installations completed by April 1993.
The system will enable each first-class passenger to choose from the flight's library of movies or video features for personal viewing. Each first-class seat will have a 6-inch LCD monitor and an 8-millimeter video player mounted in the center arm between the two seats.
In addition to the usual function controls for both the monitor and the video cassette player, passengers will also have a choice of language for much of the program material. Another feature of the Swissair system is the ability to view the same movie simultaneously on both monitors of a seat pair, thus permitting a movie placed in one player to be viewed by both seat mates.
Hughes-Avicom International, a subsidiary of Hughes Aircraft Co., is a leading producer of integrated communications, entertainment and cabin-management systems for commercial aircraft.
