HUGHES TO UPGRADE NAVY A-6E INTRUDER ATTACK SYSTEM
HUGHES TO UPGRADE NAVY A-6E INTRUDER ATTACK SYSTEM EL SEGUNDO, CALIF., Oct., 28 /PRNewswire/--Hughes Aircraft Co.
has been awarded a $47.3 million contract to upgrade the Detection and Ranging System (DRS) for the U.S. Navy's A-6E Intruder aircraft with improvements that will result in significant cost savings over the remaining operational life of the aircraft.
The upgrades will significantly improve the reliability and maintainability of the Intruder's DRS, a combination laser target designator/range finder, laser receiver and thermal imaging system that is integrated in a turret mounted under the nose of the aircraft. The award to Hughes was the first major procurement under a new Navy program to fund reliability and maintainability upgrades that will pay for themselves in cost savings within five years or less. In the case of the DRS, the upgrades are expected to generate savings of $20 million per year by reducing maintenance costs and eliminating spares requirements for the aircraft, which will be operational well beyond the turn of the century. Under the terms of the contract with the Navy Aviation Supply Office, Hughes will deliver 305 DRS retrofit kits that provide an improved infrared detector and signal/data processing converter. Production deliveries are scheduled to begin in the Summer of 1994 and be completed by Spring 1996. Hughes is a unit of GM Hughes Electronics. -0- 10/28/92 /CONTACT: Jim Knotts of Hughes Aircraft Co., 310-616-1022/ CO: Hughes Aircraft Co. ST: California IN: ARO SU:
