HUGHES SCORES HIT WITH ITS FIRST MMW MAVERICK LAUNCH
CANOGA PARK, Calif., Dec. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- An Air Force F-16 today successfully launched a Maverick missile equipped with a Hughes Aircraft Co. millimeter wave (MMW) radar seeker at an air defense unit vehicle target at Eglin Air Force Base, Fla.
The MMW seeker, developed by Hughes' Missile Systems Group of Canoga Park is designed to autonomously locate and to guide the weapon to a variety of targets, even in adverse weather. After launching, at a range approximately five miles, the missile searched for and recognized the air defense unit. The missile guided to a direct hit on the target without further communication with the launching aircraft.
This Hughes MMW technology utilized a W-band pulsed radar seeker to provide the air-to-surface missile with the ability to autonomously search out and find targets after launch from distances safely beyond the range of enemy defenses, thus increasing aircraft suvivability. Furthermore, the MMW seeker is designed to perform day or night and to offer better weather capabilities than currently fielded systems.
According to G.E. Brown, Missile Systems Group MMW program manager, this launch was the first of four launches which will test the MMW seeker against a variety of targets and validate the missile's ability to detect and prioritize other moving and stationary targets in addition to air defense units.
The MMW Maverick is designed to continue the Maverick tradition of low cost, producible technology. As with other Maverick seekers, it is easily adapted to other missile airframes. Imaging infrared Maverick seekers are currently used on the Standoff Land Attack Missile (SLAM) and the GBU-15 Guided Bomb Unit.
The Hughes MMW seeker is being developed under contract for the Air Force's Aeronautical System Division at Eglin Air Force Base. Funding for the program was provided by the Department of Defense Balanced Technology Initiative (BTI). Hughes is a unit of GM Hughes Electronics.
