HUGHES M6100 DUAL-MODE CELLULAR PHONE GAINS FCC AND DOC APPROVAL
 GERMANTOWN, Md., Aug. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- The most advanced analog/digital cellular telephone on the market has been cleared for operation by the United States Federal Communications Commission and the Canadian Department of Communication.
 The M6100 dual-mode phone from Hughes Network Systems, unveiled in February, has now met both government's criteria for distribution and use throughout North America, receiving full type approval for digital operation.
 The M6100 cellular phone is designed to accommodate the cellular industry's transition from analog to the digital transmission standard, using the latest in digital technology to provide superior audio quality for the cellular's subscriber.
 The phone also offers a range of advanced features that provide additional benefits for subscribers. Thprovides unsurpassed readability in both bright and low-lighting conditions, and from all angles. The M6100 also boasts alphanumeric capability, 99 memory locations, and easy-to-read, scrolling menus, while a unique "wave" keypad makes the phone easier to dial, especially while a driver's attention is on the road.
 The digital standard confirmed by the Cellular Telecommunications Industry Association (CTIA) is Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA), a proven technology that provides enhanced precision of signal routing and transmission for significantly improved increase cell capacity, thus alleviating the present and growing crisis of overcrowded airwaves in metropolitan areas.
 "FCC approval for the M6100 is a significant step in the introduction of digital service for the cellular marketplace, clearing the way for carriers to begin offering our dual-mode phones to subscribers and begin phasing in TDMA transmissions," said Pradeep Kaul, executive vice president for Hughes Network Systems. Kaul noted that because of the phone's analog capability, it can also operate in the 42 countries around the world that currently support the N-Amps transmission standard.
 The M6100 is now in production and will begin shipping this summer to cellular carriers that have announced their intentions to begin offering digital services in the near future. Orders totalling more than 60,000 units have been received to date from McCaw Cellular Communications, Inc., Bell Atlantic Mobile Systems, Northern Telecom and AGT Cellular of Canada. The M6100 recently debuted in Calgary, Canada, and is due to appear shortly in many of the largest marketplaces in North America, including New York, Miami, Los Angeles, and Chicago.
