HUGHES AML (R) PRODUCT LINE TO MOVE TO WINNIPEG, CANADA

HUGHES AML (R) PRODUCT LINE TO MOVE TO WINNIPEG, CANADA
TORRANCE, Calif., Dec. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Hughes Aircraft Co. announced today that it will move its line of microwave transmission equipment for the CATV industry from its present facility in Torrance to the company's operation in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.
The line, called Hughes AML (R) Products, consists of multi- channel video distribution equipment for delivering television signals in local areas. Hughes has, for more than two decades, been supplying the equipment to CATV operators as a flexible, cost- effective means of reaching their customers.
Reasons for the move, the company stated, include gaining leverage and assistance in reaching emerging international markets and Canadian government support programs for research and development. In addition, the move will provide a strong business base for the Winnipeg operation, helping to satisfy the company's Canadian industrial benefits requirements.
The company said further that the AML product line had been considered as a candidate for divestiture, but that the expected advantages of operating in Canada will permit continued growth of the business.
Over the next year, the product line will be transferred to the Winnipeg division of Hughes Aircraft of Canada Ltd., a wholly owned subsidiary of Hughes, headquartered in Calgary, Alberta. Established in 1989, Hughes Canada is involved in developing new technology related to air traffic management systems, geographic information systems and precision optics.
The Hughes AML operation, part of the company's Torrance-based Industrial Electronics Group, employs approximately 60 people in the Torrance facility. The company plans to run parallel manufacturing operations in Winnipeg and Torrance during a period of transition.
Selected Hughes AML employees will be offered relocation to Canada in order to set up the new facility and ensure that the transition has no impact on customers. Field sales and service personnel will not be affected by the changeover. Hughes said that strong efforts will be made during the transition period to find jobs for the product line's remaining employees, either through transfer to other parts of the company or through outplacement assistance.
The transition plan is also designed to assure that all production delivery schedules and service commitments continue to be met both during and after the changeover, so that customers will not be affected in any way.
Established in 1970, Hughes AML (the initials stand for Amplitude Modulated Link) offers a complete line of wideband microwave transmitters, receivers, repeaters and associated equipment. Developed specifically for the CATV industry, the equipment accepts and delivers television signals at frequencies compatible with conventional cable systems and home television sets.
More than 1,200 Hughes AML installations have been made worldwide. The AML technology has proven particularly popular for systems where the coverage area consist of populated pockets separated by difficult terrain or bodies of water.
The company said that its business strategy for the Hughes AML product line will be to upgrade existing customers' systems, develop new products utilizing new technology, and aggressively expand sales into international markets.
