 HIGH-TECH TOOLS FOR INVESTMENT MANAGEMENT
 MALIBU, Calif., April 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Major institutional investors will soon be able to benefit from the most sophisticated new technologies in implementing their investment strategies as a result of a unique partnership announced today.
 Hughes Aircraft Co., one of the nation's leading electronics and aerospace companies, and Pareto Partners, an international investment management firm, have formed a joint venture company that will develop a highly innovative approach to investment management. The new partnership will bring such advanced tools as artificial intelligence, signal processing and pattern recognition to bear on managing institutional investment portfolios.
 Under terms of an agreement signed this week, Hughes, through a new subsidiary called Hughes Research Analytics Inc., and Pareto Partners have created a joint venture company, Hughes Pareto Research Partners. The new venture will develop innovative software, including what are known as "expert systems," which will be applied to the management of global equity, fixed income and tactical asset allocation strategies.
 Pareto Partners will have worldwide responsibility for the management and marketing of these products to institutional investors. Hughes and Pareto Partners will each have a 50 percent beneficial interest in the joint venture company.
 The new company will utilize the expertise and technologies of Hughes Research Laboratories' Artificial Intelligence Center. It will be managed by an executive board comprised of Arthur N. Chester, vice president and director, Hughes Research Laboratories; W. Allen Reed, vice president and treasurer, Hughes Aircraft Co.; Charles P. Dolan, manager of the information management systems research department at HRL; Paul Dimitruk, chairman of Pareto Partners; Christine V. Downton, Pareto's chief investment officer and Lynne S. Minard, Pareto's director of marketing.
 Pareto Partners, based in London, is owned by its senior executives and Mellon Bank. Hughes Aircraft is a unit of GM Hughes Electronics.
