HUDGINS LIFTS BRAVES; HIS 7TH-INNING SINGLE CAPS BIRMINGHAM RALLY.

Byline: Daily News

Senior catcher James Hudgins drove in the game-winning run with a two-out single for the Birmingham High baseball team, which scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning and escaped with a 3-2 come-from-behind win over Franklin in the Daily News Invitational Tuesday afternoon at Birmingham.

Birmingham pitcher Joey Rubin made the most of his first start, scattering three hits while striking out six and walking none in a complete game.

The senior pitcher needed only 68 pitches to earn the win.

Aaron Minor went 2 for 4 with two runs and had two stolen bases for Birmingham (1-0).

Cleveland 8, Grant 5: Junior Javier Gomez hammered a three-run home run and pitched the final three innings to lead the Cavaliers past the Lancers.

Gomez's home run capped a four-run seventh inning for Cleveland (1-0). Dan Palardy, who started and threw five strong innings, added a double for the Cavaliers.

The Lancers (0-1) staged a late rally with two runs in the bottom of the seventh.

Eagle Rock 7, Canoga Park 5: Senior Omar Iniquez went 2 for 3 with a double, two RBI and scored three runs as the Eagles (1-0) knocked off the Hunters at Canoga Park.

Hector Herrera went 2 for 3 and Juan Lopez threw two scoreless innings.

South Gate 10, San Fernando 0: The Tigers (0-1) were limited to three hits in a game cut to five innings because of the 10-run rule. San Fernando's three hits were all extra base hits.
