HSE forks out [euro]242m on agency fees.

THE HSE has spent twice as much on agency fees than it originally estimated, a Fianna Fail TD said yesterday.

The figures, released to the party's spokesperson on mental health James Browne, revealed more than [euro]242million has been forked out since 2014.

He said: "This is a significant overrun by any standard and shows the failure to control agency costs has become endemic."

Meanwhile, there has been an 11% drop in the number of agency workers in the past 12 months, it has emerged.

Around 50,400 employees were recorded at the beginning of 2019, accounting for 2.6% of all staff in the State.
