HSBC raises pounds 50,000 for local charity.

AROUND the world, HSBC staff at all levels are supporting projects in their local communities and raising funds for causes close to their hearts. With this in mind, in June 2008 HSBC in the North committed to a year-long partnership with The Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS). The aim of the campaign to raise awareness along with funds for this great cause.

The Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS) is a registered Charity that provides and maintains emergency air ambulance provision across North Yorkshire, Cumbria and the North East of England. GNAAS is one of the only air ambulance charities to staff its helicopters with specialist trauma doctors. It also employs its own highly-experienced paramedics who are trained to support the doctors' skills.

Throughout the year, HSBC staff across the region will be involved in a number of events to boost the profile of the Air Ambulance and to raise funds. The last month has seen two major events: Best Place to Walk - Coast to Coast Trek. Eight staff from north region committed to do a sponsored walk, in two teams, along the route of the Hadrian's Wall Path between Tynemouth and Bowness-on-Solway.

Over seven days in late September the two teams (walking East to West and West to East) were joined by more than 70 other staff and successfully completed the 107 mile route.

Carlisle Abseil - On Saturday October 11 HSBC staff in Carlisle were joined by local residents and emergency services teams in a sponsored abseil down the side of the Civic Centre. More than 50 people participated in the 150ft abseil and raised a significant sum.

Since the campaign started in June, branches have held raffles, Wii competitions and bake-offs to name but a few events. These events, with the support of the HSBC Pound for Pound scheme matching sponsorship, have helped HSBC in the North to present the Air Ambulance with pounds 50,000 and the campaign continues.
