HP gives PC a photo scanner.

SANTA CLARA, Cal.--Hewlett-Packard Co. last week presented its new Pavilion line of home PCs, including a model that features a built-in photo scanner.

HP's new retail machines are expected to sell for between $1,899 and $2,999, up about $400 from last August on the low end and the same price at the top end. Like other vendors' spring lineups, HP's Pavilion series includes faster processors, larger hard drives, more memory and quicker CD-ROM drives.

Perhaps the one truly distinguishing feature is the photo scanner, which will be on the Pavilion 7130P ($2,649).

With this technology, users will be able to feed photos into the computer and see the images on the PC screen almost instantly. They will be able to edit, to remove imperfections such as "red eye" and scratches, and send photos over the Internet.

Analyst Andy Bose, a vice president at IDC/Link Resources in New York, called the photo scanner a "dynamite concept" and a sales tool.

HP, which entered the retail PC market last year with the objective of becoming a top-three player within a few years, has become a force in the channel, analysts and retailers say, in large part because of the company's tremendous brand recognition.

HP officials say they expect to grow much faster than analysts' estimates of a 15 percent to 20 percent rise in U.S. PC shipments this year over 1995. "I think there is still strong demand out there," said Webb McKinney, general manager of HP's home products division.
