HOWTEK ANNOUNCES FORMATION OF COLOR FAST, A DIGITAL
 REPROGRAPHICS CENTER
HUDSON, N.H., April 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Howtek Inc. (AMEX: HTK) announced today that the opening of Color Fast, Inc., a digital pre- press and printing services company. According to David Bothwell, president of Howtek, "Color Fast is truly a state-of-the-art digital pre-press and printing company." Services to be offered by Color Fast include: digital image photography; color and black-and-white scanning, retouching, color correction and masking; raster image processing of Post Script(R) and EPS files; film output of 65 lpi to 250 lpi; conventional and digital color proofing; direct to plate color data transfer; archiving of page data for reprints; reproduction of four-color process material; and finishing services.
The front-end system is comprised of the Howtek Colorscan(R) electronic pre-press production system, the DSC 1000 high resolution digital camera, and the Scanmaster(tm) D4000 high resolution drum scanner. Colorscan is an HP 486-based system for producing high resolution, and four-color film separations. Completed paginated color signatures are output in minutes via the high-speed, proprietary RIP raster image processor). The DSC 1000 (digital studio camera) is a direct digital camera that captures three dimensional images and delivers high resolution, 24-bit color files directly into the pre-press system. For high resolution scanning, the D4000 drum scanner is capable of scanning reflective or transparent images up to 10"x10" at resolutions up to 4000 dpi. Another service Color Fast offers is the ability to accept and pass data via a modem link.
Color Fast General Manager Jack Hickey explained, "In a real-time situation, the data exchange process is bidirectional. Color Fast can scan an image and pass a low-resolution TIFF file back to the customer via modem for positioning on the page. The original high resolution scan remains resident on the Colorscan system. The fully assembled page is sent back in PostScript file format with full OPI comments and we then replace the low-resolution scan with the high-resolution original. The digital color data file is then sent to the Heidelberg press computer for imaging and printing. With this equipment, we have the ability to RIP the assembled pages in Colorscan, pass the digital color data to the press computer for imaging and complete the press run of 5,000 four-color pieces in about an hour. The obvious advantages to the customer are convenience, fast turn-around and reduced costs because there is less production and make-ready time and expense."
Using the Presstek digital imaging technology, the Heidelberg GTO-DI press accepts digital pages and images its own plates, in register, directly on the press. All film, imposition stripping, off-line platemaking and resulting chemical by-products are eliminated.
