HOWARD YORK NAMED CHIEF INVESTMENT OFFICER
 OF ITT HARTFORD INSURANCE GROUP
HARTFORD, Conn., July 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Howard A. York has been elected executive vice president and chief investment officer of ITT Hartford Insurance Group by the company's board of directors.
Previously, York was senior vice president and chief investment officer of ITT Hartford Life Insurance Companies, a subsidiary of ITT Hartford.
In his new position, York will be responsible for more than $32.7 billion in invested assets (as of June 30, 1992), composed primarily of fixed maturities, equity securities, real estate and separate accounts. He also will join ITT Hartford's board of directors and will chair the board's finance committee.
"Howard York brings to his new position the knowledge, experience and creativity to manage an investment portfolio that has earned Hartford Life praise from the investment community," said Rand V. Araskog, chairman, president and chief executive of ITT Corp., parent company of ITT Hartford.
Moody's Investors Service calls the credit quality of Hartford Life's investment portfolio "among the best in the industry," clearly a tribute to York's financial acumen, said Araskog. "We're extremely pleased to have someone of Howard's caliber in our organization to lead ITT Hartford's investment operations."
York succeeds Edward N. Bennett, ITT Hartford's executive vice president and chief investment officer, who last month announced plans to retire.
York, 48, joined ITT Hartford in 1978 and has advanced through a number of increasingly responsible positions, including assistant vice president and director of invested assets at Hartford Life in 1986, and vice president and chief investment officer, Hartford Life, in 1987. He was elected a senior vice president at Hartford Life in 1989, and joined Hartford Life's board of directors in 1990. At Hartford Life, York managed an $18.6 billion investment portfolio (as of June 30, 1992).
A graduate of the University of Notre Dame, York holds an MBA from the University of Utah.
In a related move, Joseph H. Gareau, vice president, fixed income securities, has been elected senior vice president and chief investment officer of ITT Hartford's property-casualty companies. In his new position, he will report to York.
ITT Hartford, a subsidiary of ITT Corp., is one of the nation's oldest and largest international insurance and financial services operations. Member companies offer commercial property and casualty insurance, automobile and homeowners coverages, and a variety of life insurance, employee benefit and asset management plans.
