HOWARD JOHNSON FRANCHISE SYSTEMS, INC. ANNOUNCES INTERNATIONAL EXPANSION CORPORACION IMPULSORA ROGA TO BE MASTER SUB-FRANCHISOR FOR LATIN AMERICA
NEW YORK, Nov. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Howard Johnson Franchise Systems, Inc. and Corporacion Impulsora Roga, S.A. (CIRSA) announced today that they have entered into an agreement in which CIRSA will become the lodging franchisor's first and exclusive master sub-franchisor in Central America, South America and the Caribbean. The joint announcement was made at a news conference at the Jacob Javits Convention Center in New York during the AH&MA International Hotel/Motel & Restaurant Show.
Howard Johnson Franchise Systems, Inc., which franchises Howard Johnson Plaza-Hotels, Hotels, Lodges, and HoJo Inns and currently has nearly 600 properties throughout the United States, Mexico and Canada, will now offer franchises in Latin America and the Caribbean through CIRSA, led by Chairman Guillermo Rocha. CIRSA, which was formed in 1979, is the parent company to a group of eight travel related companies with more than 25 years of experience in providing hotel and restaurant management, franchising and development, airline chartering, retail travel, and hotel supplies.
One of CIRSA's companies, Sistema de Franquicias H.J. de Mexico, has been the master sub-franchisor for Howard Johnson properties in Mexico since 1988. There are now eight Howard Johnson properties with 1,770 rooms in operation and four more under construction or being remodeled throughout Mexico, making it the fastest-growing hotel franchise in the region.
Eric E. Pfeffer, president and chief operating officer of Howard Johnson Franchise Systems, Inc., said, "We have enjoyed a fruitful relationship with Corporacion Impulsora Roga and have watched them produce high quality, cost-effective, and well-managed Howard Johnson hotels in Mexico through their subsidiary, Sistema de Franquicias, over the past four years. Our new agreement with them will mark the biggest expansion of the Howard Johnson hotel chain outside of the United States."
Mr. Pfeffer, a native of Venezuela, also noted that "in addition to expanding internationally, the Howard Johnson hotel chain is also increasing the number of properties in the United States." Pfeffer, who has been with the Howard Johnson organization since the beginning of his career 15 years ago, was appointed president in April 1991. Since that time, the number of properties in the Howard Johnson system has increased from 420 properties to almost 600. He is aiming to aggressively grow the hotel chain to 700 properties by the end of 1993 and 800 to 850 by 1995.
"The new franchises in Latin America and the Caribbean will be with independent hoteliers in these regions developed through both conversions and new construction," continued Pfeffer. "Needless to say, we will make sure that the high quality associated with the Howard Johnson name will remain."
Howard Johnson Franchise Systems, Inc. and CIRSA are entering into the agreement for a period of 20 years. The number of hotels to be established per year varies according to the size of the country. In large countries like Brazil, Argentina and Venezuela, the targeted number is 15 to 20 properties per country over the next two decades.
Guillermo Rocha, chairman and president of CIRSA, said, "During the past four years we have had the privilege of developing the Howard Johnson franchise network in Mexico. Because of the composition of our group of travel related companies, we have been able to offer effective and diversified support to our franchisees in the areas of marketing, operations, financial controls, training, personnel administration, and maintenance."
"Not only has our relationship with Howard Johnson been extremely cordial and fruitful, but we are convinced that the Howard Johnson image and name have an intrinsic value which make it particularly attractive to hotel owners or investors in the geographical area where we are planning to expand," Mr. Rocha continued. "We are extremely motivated by this opportunity, and have assigned this important development task to a member of our executive team, Guillermo Solorzano, who has held other positions in our organization, such as general manager for eight years of the Gran Hotel El Convento, our operation in San Juan, Puerto Rico. He is very familiar with the Latin America and Caribbean regions."
Mr. Rocha also said, "Fortunately, from our active participation in the Inter-American Hotel Association, we have derived a close relationship with many hotel owners and operators in the region, as well as with the executives and officers of the national hotel associations in several countries and in the Caribbean Hotel Association. We intend to call upon all of them to provide guidance and first-hand knowledge in selecting new projects or existing properties which may be interested in becoming a part of our chain."
Howard Johnson Franchise Systems, Inc., a subsidiary of Hospitality Franchise Systems, Inc., is an international chain with nearly 600 properties located throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico. It is the eighth largest hotel chain in the world, and its HoJo Inns brand is the fastest-growing franchise in the economy lodging segment. Its toll-free reservations number is 1-800-I-GO-HOJO (1-800-446-4656).
CIRSA is the parent company to a group of eight travel related companies of which Mr. Rocha is also chairman: Provincial de Hoteles, which Mr. Rocha founded in 1967 and is now celebrating its 25th anniversary; Provotel; Viajes Makrotur; Sistema de Franquicias H.J. de Mexico, which he founded in 1988; Duro Internacional; P.H. International, Inc.; Gastronomica Satelite; and Provotel International, Inc. (based in Houston).
