HOW TRAVELERS CAN PROTECT THEIR HOME FROM BURGLARS; CHECKLIST FROM LEADING SECURITY PROVIDER, WESTEC

 IRVINE, Calif., Aug. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- When you prepare for travel plans, your first step should be to protect your home. Each year, Americans lose more than $3 billion to residential burglaries.
 "While we're traveling, burglars are casing our homes, looking for signs that we're away," says Jonathan Cobb, vice president of sales and marketing for Westec Security, one of the nation's largest residential and commercial security providers. "Burglars don't look for homes with the best merchandise, but homes that are the easiest targets."
 Cobb says Westec recommends the following steps to reduce your chances of being burglarized when traveling:
 -- Install good locks on all doors and windows, and use them;
 -- Have the post office hold the mail, or have a neighbor collect it;
 -- Leave a key with a friend or trusted neighbor. Never hide one outside the home. Also, tell this person your itinerary and how you can be reached;
 -- This person should periodically check the home to make sure everything is secure, and to change the positions of drapes and blinds;
 -- Have all delivery services: bottled water, newspapers, etc., stopped. Don't leave notes -- they invite burglars;
 -- Arrange for lawn care and removal of circulars;
 -- Put lights (outside/inside) on timers to go on at night and a television or radio on a timer to simulate conversation. This gives your home a lived-in appearance;
 -- On your telephone answering message, never say you're away -- only that you're unavailable to come to the phone;
 -- If possible, keep a car parked in your driveway (even if it's only the neighbor's), having it moved periodically from one area to another; and
 -- If you have a security system, notify your security company how long you'll be away, where they can reach you and who has a key to your home.
 Many security companies, like Westec, offer 24-hour security system monitoring to detect burglary and fire. Depending on your area, Westec also provides private patrol services to conduct daily perimeter checks around your home. Additionally, Westec sells a telephone access feature for its security systems that allow you to check the status of your system and control it from any touchtone telephone in the world.
