HOW THEY RATED; INTERNATIONAL FOOTBALL.

DAVID JAMES: Another calamity night for the big Portsmouth keeper, who made a decent save early on. Caught out at the free-kick for the second Czech goal and needlessly rushed from his goal chasing a long ball, which was almost disastrous. 5

ASHLEY COLE: Chelsea defender got forward quickly to support the attack, but will be disappointed he could not prevent Milan Baros' opening effort from going in 7

RIO FERDINAND: A solid, if unspectacular display from the United centrehalf. Could have got closer to Baros and was replaced just before the hour 7

JOHN TERRY: England's captain was turned too easily for the opening goal, but the Chelsea man grew in stature as the match went on. 7

WES BROWN: Netted his first senior England goal with a powerful header at the near post, but gave the ball away more than he should have done. 7

STEVEN GERRARD: Liverpool midfielder was pushed out more on the left, but cut inside well to create some openings. 7

GARETH BARRY: Another good showing from the Villa man, who was happiest when collecting the ball from deep. 7

FRANK LAMPARD: Chelsea midfielder was not really involved in the game during the first half, but stepped up his work-rate after the restart. 7

DAVID BECKHAM: Galaxy star delivered a perfect corner for England's goal. Pin-point passing and composure on the ball was highlight of largely below-par England team effort 8

JERMAIN DEFOE: Lively display by the Portsmouth striker, who on another night against a lesser goalkeeper could have had a couple of goals 7

WAYNE ROONEY: Man United frontman was full of running, and appeared more comfortable partnering Emile Heskey in second half. However, failed to get himself a decent opening and was replaced 6

SUBSTITUTES:

EMILE HESKEY (for Defoe, 46): The big Wigan striker gave England a new dimension in attack for the second half. 6

JOE COLE (for Gerrard, 57): Chelsea winger produced a couple of promising runs and then popped up in injury time to bundle home theequaliser. 7

JONATHAN WOODGATE (for Ferdinand, 57): The Tottenham defender slotted into the centre and tracked back well as the Czechs pressed. 6

STEWART DOWNING (for Rooney, 68): Boro forward was full of running, but dragged a late chance across goal. 6

DAVID BENTLEY (for Lampard, 79): Tottenham's pounds 17million man did his best to inject some urgency. 6

JERMAINE JENAS (for Beckham, 79): Spurs midfielder had little time to impose himself on the match. 6
